Sentence Stretchletics (see instructions on inside cover of Words duotang)
FRIDAY NO HOMEWORK ( except SPECIAL MISSIONS )
Here are some general skills we are currently working on:
- Responding to questions using ROPES (Repeat question words, give your Opinion, give Proof that support your opinion, give Examples that support your opinion, Summarize your answer). This may practiced orally too.
- Using clear words (avoid vague ones: it, she, the thing, over there, them...)
- Students should be trying to write letters of two or more paragraphs (each paragraph three to five sentences long), using a prewriting organizer such as an “idea web”. Remind your son or daughter to apply paragraph skills learned (e.g. topic sentence, sequence words such as "Since", "So", "When", "first", "next", "Near it was..."). You can also help your child avoid mistakes by encouraging your child to read his or her work aloud to edit word choice in blue, sentence starts and punctuation in red, name starts in yellow, and spelling fixes in green.
- As we continue to improve our organization (keep a clean desk, organize a duotang, and plan his or her time), I have continued giving weekly time for this. In some cases I may send materials home to be sorted into the correct duotangs.
- Encourage you child to use cursive letters when possible. An assessment sheet will be sent home following an assessment in the near future showing areas to focus on when practicing cursive with your child.
